Central Air Conditioning

Central Air Conditioners

If you are exploring the cooling option for a new or existing house, consider purchasing an energy-efficient air conditioner. Manufacturers of cooling equipment have achieved major improvements in energy consumption over the past years. Still, some cooling equipment is more energy-efficient than others.

Shopping for a central air conditioner?

One way to identify the efficiency level of a central air conditioner is by reading the information on the EnerGuide Rating found on the back page of manufacturers' brochures. This information is excellent for comparison shopping since the scale shows you at a glance whether the air conditioner is a good or an average energy performer.

So read on to find out what the information on the EnerGuide Rating shows you so that you can make an informed decision when buying a new central air conditioner.

If you're seeking the most energy efficient models available you can also look for the ENERGY STAR® logo alongside the EnerGuide rating. The ENERGY STAR Logo means that the product meets the highest energy efficiency levels.

Using your air conditioner energy efficiently

Selecting an energy-efficient air conditioner is the first step in reducing your energy costs. Follow the steps listed below for more savings:

Set the thermostat at the highest temperature setting for occupant comfort (25.5°C is usually recommended).

If the space is unoccupied for more than four hours, the thermostat should be set at about 28°C. Shut off the cooling system when the house will be unoccupied for more than 24 hours.

Do not block the air conditioner vents with drapes or furniture.

Use continuous air conditioner fan operation only when continuous air movement is needed to maintain comfortable conditions in the room.
